Inter - Ministry Volleyball 04 10 2008

The competition took place at CCAB. The first game started at 10am and ended near 6pm. Double knock out system. MOE sent in 3 ladies' teams.

Woke up at 7.30am and went for breakfast with pb at ang mo kio ave 10 blk 409 market. Had a bowl of yummy yong tau foo soup and was very satisfied :P Arrived at CCAB about 9.15am. Got change and got ready for warm up.

Hmmm, left shoulder had a nudging pain...i strained it 2 weeks ago when playing volleyball...guess had not done proper warm up...put 1 'ko yor' patch on the shoulder praying that the pain will go away...but nope...shoulder became tighter...finally had to ask Aggie to tape it up for me which i felt better.

After the award ceremony, we went for dinner at The Chinese Feast - Chong Qing Hot Pot @ Suntec, 3 Temasek Boulevard #B1 - 061 Suntec City Mall. It had been my craving to eat there for weeks. Simply loved the thinly sliced belly pork, really tasty! Savouring every bit...yummy. The 'ma la' spicy ala carte buffet steamboat, my favourite :D The 'ba bao cha' 8 treasure tea was rejuvating to a long day i had. You've got to try the cool 'ba bao cha', heavenly :B Had a fantastic meal with aggie, marie, liza, daisy and Jessie. Arrived home at about 10.30pm.

Knees were stiff, left shoulder strained, fingers were aching from setting up the balls in the games I could hardly bent them...my weekend will be spent on recovering myself for monday's corporate netball league. More 'ko yor' then.

Took night bus to Kuantan

(about 8 hours journey...poor butt and back...)

Arrived at Kuantan at about 5+ am

All alighted the bus and had breakfast (pratas)

Then off we went to visit a craft shop planned for us before we checked in to our hotel rooms

The Malaysians were very hospitable. We were given welcoming lunch. See the happy and satisfied faces :D

Budget to buy a car is about $60k...

Few Options to consider...

Toyota Rush (Lime Green)

Finally the new Altis (with some of the Camry's feature) is here!

Went with my sister-in-law Geraldine and brother Marcus to both Toyota and Honda showrooms.

I went to view the car with the intention all ready to buy the new Altis with Geraldine. Hoping to get more rebates when we buy together. I was determined to buy Altis as i have heard so much about it and seen it in New Zealand last year.

I felt Honda was a little high-ended...so did not think too much about it. However, when i saw Honda Civics on the road i simply envy the driver behind the wheel.

Went to Honda showroom, walked around and admire the Honda Civic 1.6 and 1.8. Sat in it a few times rotating between the driver's seat (the sporty cockpit is so cool, digital meter wow!) and passengers' seat (spacious and so comfortable) :D The design was indeed aerodynamic and state-of-the-art!

Geraldine : Want to test drive?

Me : Hmm...no need (in my heart ..it was like wow such a sleek car, really like the physical form of the car but...always a but...)

Geraldine : Sure?

Me : Hmm...think no need

(kept thinking in my heart how nice if i can afford it?)

Geraldine : Let's go over to Toyota's showroom

Me : Yeah!

Went over to Toyota showroom and headed straight to Altis. Sat at the driver's seat to see if i could feel any connection with it. More compartments and a dvd player (caught my eyes)...

An ancle came in and sat next to me..."he went ouch!" and i wondered what happened. He hit his head at the car roof. Then we realised that the car roof was low. I went behind to sit at the passenger's seat and straight away i did not really like it as it was kind of uncomfortable.

So we proceeded to test drive the car. The feel was not as good as the old Altis which my dad drives. The speed did not pick up as fast as i expected compare to my dad's. I did not feel as exhilarated as i should be then...feel was only so so. All 3 of us test drove and had a discussion after that. The price was $65 800 and the car was made in Thailand.

We decided to go back to Honda. Asked to test drive the car. Geraldine wanted to test drive first. I had a chance to sit at the passengers' seat and it was already so comfortable and spacious. When it was my turn to test drive i was already feeling excited. The moment i took the wheel and drove...the feel is indescribable. Sooo shiok! The drive was so smooth!

That was it! Did some calculations and decided to buy Honda Civic. Asked to include the DVD and the agent agreed. Deal sealed at $70,600. This was my biggest $$$ payout but i was satisfied. I am finally owned a Japan-made car :D

Can't wait for the new car to arrive!

A week later, received sms that says "COE at $15389, new car expected to arrive 3 weeks time.

Another sms came and showed 3 weeks time, you may collect your car. I simply could not contain my joy. My family was equally happy and looking forward to seeing the new car :D

2 weeks passed, "New car number SJE XXXX C "..haha everyone in the family bought the number.

Collected the car and it was like collecting a new born baby. So new and so fragile...i drove very slowly during the first 2 weeks ...was so afraid to ......avoided lorries and pickups...not easy.

To all my teacher friends out there.

Throughout the course of a day, I have been called upon to be an actor, friend, nurse and doctor, coach, finder of lost articles, money lender, taxi driver, psychologist, substitute parent, salesman, politician and a keeper of the faith.

Despite the maps, charts, formulas, verbs, stories and books, I have really had nothing to teach, for my students have only themselves to learn, and I know it takes the whole world to tell you who you are.

I am a paradox. I speak loudest when I listen the most. My greatest gifts are in what I am willing to appreciately receive from my students.

Material wealth is not one of my goals, but I am a full-time treasure seeker in my quest for new opportunities for my students to use their talents and in my constant search for those talents that sometimes lie buried in self-defeat.

I am the most fortunate of all who labour.A doctor is allowed to usher life into the world in one magic moment. I am allowed to see that life is reborn each day with new questions, ideas and friendships.An architect knows that if he builds with care, his structure may stand for centuries. A teacher knows that if he builds with love and truth, what he builds will last forever.

I am a warrior, daily doing battle against peer pressure, negativity, fear, conformity, prejudice, ignorance and apathy. But I have great allies : Intelligence, Curiosity, Parental Support, Individuality, Creativity, Faith, Love and Laughter all rush to my banner with indomitable support.

And so I have a past that is rich in memories. I have a present that is challenging, adventurous and fun because I am allowed to spend my days with the future.

As the annual netball farewell approaches, I am not looking forward...seriously. There were so many golden memories and disappointments we shared together. This graduating batch lifted my spirit and hope when we came in 4th in the North Zone Netball Tournament in 2003. It was really gratifying.

As i was selecting pictures for the montage, it was like a flash back of the times we had spent together. Be it in the scorching sun and dampening rain, we trained hard and relentlessly. We celebrated every bit of victories and disappointments - happy that we made progresses along the way. Can't believe that most of them started to learn netball from scratch - can't even hop properly and don't know the rules at all and now they are playing netball at a reasonably standard. Thinking of the whole process...only one word can describe - PAINSTAKING

Finally managed to get the montage done with the help of siewling. Has viewed it many a time, can never get enough of it. The song chosen was really meaningful...very proud of myself...hehe.

Yeah, i am finally getting discharged. It was really unbearable not being able to get off bed after the surgery.Totally harrowing to just lie in bed for 40 hrs, having body soreness, and not having shower....arghhhh my nightmare! Only get to sponge the body, least that is a gesture of humanity for me, appreciate that. The meals were great! Ha, menus to choose from. They have got Local delights, Western, Chinese, Vegetarian and Malay food. Food was not too oily, vegetables and fruits were fresh, not too bad. No wonder many of my friends recommended Mt Alvernia. The nurses were patient and mostly friendly and prompt to answer our needs. Once in a while, a sister would walked in and say hi.

Dad and bro came to help me get discharged. Settled bill of $8521.95 all in cash and $4400 were deducted from Medisave. Phew! that's a lot of money really. Bro got busy drawing money from ATM machines, using nets and credit cards...haha. Can imagine his multi-tasks look. Was wondering what if the patient does not have so much money to pay, what happens? Is there like an instalment plan? Or can delayed payment till insurance agency process paper work? Hmm...

Home Sweet Home! It so comfy to lie on my own bed once again. The knee brace...the first thing i can't wait to rid it off. Now my knee can breathe again, phew! Knee still swollen and has water retention in it. Quads feel like jelly. Bruises all over the left leg especially the back of my knee. Still not much pain, could feel the tight hamstring. The next few days was sleeping without my brace as i am not a kicker in my sleep..lol Elevated my legs while sleeping. A little discomfy but better than having the brace on my leg, made me itch.

Went for follow up on 14th Nov at Gleneagles. Doc said the surgery went well and that my semitendinosus tendon is small therefore he also taken gracilis tendon(next to semitendinosus tendon) to make a stronger ACL graft. He changed the dressing on my knee and i saw two incisions and a 2-3cm stitches (because of taking the other tendon, has to be bigger)...eeeee(in my heart, the wound - ugly leh). What to do, to be able to heal properly and play wholeheartedly is important, a little scar...ok lah.

The next visit to the doc will be on 23rd Nov.

Finally, the day has come for my knee surgery. Went to school to settle a few things and off to Mt Alvernia Hospital at 11.20am. Blessed to have mum and nephew company. Reached the hospital at about 11.45am, was early as admission was supposed to be 12.30pm. Registered anyway, paid $1000 cash deposit and had $3000 medisave deducted. The admission administration and blood tests were pretty smooth and quick. That's the convenience of a private hospital.

Was brought to my ward, St Clare, Room No 523A. Asked for a 4 bedded (cost $135 per day) but due to the unavailability had to choose between a 2 bedded (cost $190 per day) and 6 bedded. Discussed with Mum and decided with the 2 bedded. One of the sister nurses went through a long list of things regarding the ward and surgery with me. Very assuring though.

The wait for the operation was a little torturous. With 3 hours to go, i took out whatever i need from my bag and placed it within reach, watched TV and rested. Could not sleep though...keep thinking about the operation process...ha! as if i am the doc performing the op. Prayed for things to go smoothly in the op theater. At about 3pm, i was asked to change out of my casual wear. Whether you are hospitalised the first time or many times, the moment we get changed into the ward's robe, it does create immediately a patient's role for you. It makes you feel weak. I was pretty anxious for the next one and a half hour. At 4.10pm, came a bed trolley that went pass my room. As the door of my room was not closed, that actually caused loads of butterflies in my stomach as i was able to see and hear what went on outside. Sometimes urgent footsteps, one moment doc discussing the patient's case, another saw a patient being wheeled pass, next a nurse walked into the room to take blood pressure and temperature of the patient next door... All these made my heart pound faster. The bed trolley came back...and the guy said oh it you! He actually overshot. Then he assured me, helped me onto the trolley and put a blanket over me. As i was wheeled backwards, he asked me to close my eyes. But i wanna see where i was gonna be wheeled to i kept my eyes open. During that moment, i was in a flashback mode...whatever happened to my knee came back to mind.

As we approached the theater, i could feel the cool air coming out of it. I was parked next to another patient who was also awaiting her operation. There was others too. You could hear many conversations " Is theater 3 ready?, Has the doc come yet? Whose patient is this? Theater 4 ready, let's go!, Hi, What's your name ?...followed by a long pause...oh someone asking for my name...HSH, which knee ? Left knee... That was my anesthesian, Dr Lee. He looked at my file, asked if i have any drug allergy, i shook my head. Then a few minutes later, i was wheeled into theater 5. In the theater, there was a TV, many lights overhead and equipment. I was transferred onto another bed where they got me ready. The nurse said to the doc, give oxygen? i knew that was GA. Inhale a few times and was totally knocked out. The next moment i knew i was waiting for the GA to bate off. I asked a nurse who was filing my documents what the time was, she said 10 pass 7. I said to myself how come the surgery took so long. It took almost 3 hours. Normally it should take about one hour to one and a half hours.

At my ward, my family, Aggie and Daze were there. When i was transfered to my bed, my left leg felt so heavy and had a 'sour' sensation. My stomach grumbling, i was very thirsty and hungry all of a sudden. Asked the nurse if i could drink some water and eat the food my mum prepared, she checked if i feel nausea a not. I replied nope, not at all. Had a few mouthful of the tasty fish mee suan, i was full already. Just wanted to sleep after that. The whole night, the nurse kept checking to see if i feel nausea at all, any fever and blood pressure.

At about 5ish in the morning, the nurse asked if i want to pee, i said nope and she insisted i do it. Well i spent the next 5 mins sitting on the bedpan, trying not to sit fully on it as my left leg needs to be straightened. The 5 mins seemed like 30 mins. It was really frustrating to stay in that position and nothing came out. Perspiration and exhaustion filled me entirely. My left quads were pulling and it unbearable. I had to imagine you know...huge waterfall, fast flowing water...least my mental skills worked. Gradually it came. I never had such a hard time p**. OMG!

There was no nauseousness, no fever and blood pressure was within the range for the next couple of days. Left knee was in bandage and a huge guard. Felt heavy and stiff. There was no pain, side of knee was numb.

I am truly blessed!

Three more days to the surgery, do feel a little worried. A feeling of uncertainty suddenly overwhelmed me today. Come to think of it, my threshold of pain can be quite low... ("_) how to endure it after the surgery? It is now all in the mental state. How to psyche myself up to remain positive? How not to fall into the depression situation?

Public Service Inter-Ministry Volleyball 2005

We started training on every friday at CCAB since February/March from 7 - 10pm. I had enjoyed every training sessions and supper. Am always looking forward to friday and of course the Public Service Inter - Ministry Championship.

This year we have 4 ladies volleyball teams to represent MOE for the Public Service Inter-Ministry Volleyball. As the points are calculated this year due to more ministries taking part, our teams have to try our best to come in as Champion in order for MOE to claim this year's Public Service title.

1st Runner up - MHA
2nd Runner up - MOE Team 2 (Irene Heng's Team)
3rd Runner up - MOE Team 1 (Pui Fun's Team)

MOE team 2 consists of 7 players namely Aggie, Daze, Jessie, Wendy, Lok Chi, Caroline and myself. Our bodies were very tired and our butts were sore from waiting. We were very fortunate to play 3 games (2 wins and 1 loss) and secure 3rd position ($250). Won MINDEF and MOE 1 and lost to MHA. We were seeded this year and we played less game in the winner's pool. Those in the loser's pool had to play more games in order to stay in the competition.

MOE 4 was close in securing a place in the top 4 position and we thought MOE's 4 teams can win hands down. Unfortunately, they had a tough game and lost to MHA (our rival every year) by a close margin.

I am really aching all over my body just from sitting around and waiting for our games. Was worried about my knee condition and pray i can last through the games. Thank goodness, everything went well. The last game i was a little frustrated as we did not try our best to exploit MHA's weakness. We were merely playing with the flow and trying to get the ball over to their side. But I must say our team has improved so much. And the next thing we want to do will be to improve our weaknesses and build on our strengths - more on depth and peripheral vision, flexible positional attacks and defence.

Next year, we will have Yvonne(pregnant), meiling (doing master in Australia) and xie wei (doing master in Australia) back in the team. Really missed playing with them.

Looking forward to next year's training. Wanna recover well after the op and PLAY again without much worries (",)

Finally got to make appointment with Dr Tan Mak Yong from Gleneagles Hospital to fix my ACL operation.

Date : 7th Nov 2005 (Monday)
Venue : Mt Alvernia Hospital
Reporting time : 12.30pm (blood tests)

Cost : abt $ 12k +

Gonna be in clutches for 2 weeks. 6 weeks in special knee guard
Phew! Am i glad. I thought it takes longer. No contact sports for 6 months.

ACL Restoration using Semitendinosus Tendon

Advantages
4 bundle graft is stronger and stiffer than the patellar tendon

Disadvantages
Graft fixation to bone, staples, endo-button.
The graft harvest can be difficult, with cutting the tendons off short
Longer time for graft healing to bone 10 to 12 weeks (about 3 months).

Early aggressive rehabilitation
Aligetti and Marder showed there was no difference in outcome with early aggressive rehab. Therefore, the semitendinosus graft has been shown to withstand aggressive rehab, and early return to sports. Howell has also reported early return to sports without a brace at 6 months using cross pin femoral fixation.

As long as i am able to play sports competitively, i am contented. Missed those days when i can compete and play at a higher level...

The Myth

History, legends and Jackie-style adventure
In 'The Myth', director Stanley Tong combines 2,000-year-old Chinese mythology with modern-day action adventure, with scenes that alternate from present day to Qin Dynasty. There is a little of history, myth and cultural undertones in the film. For instance, legend has it that during the 36th year of the reign of emperor Qin Shihuang, 'a star fell from the sky into the Eastern Province, where it became a stone.' The stone foretold that the Earth would split for the death of Qin Shihuang.

The emperor, who was at the time on a quest for the Elixir of Eternal Youth, killed the villagers who lived near the rock - and then discovered its incredible power of anti-gravity. Qin Shihuang started to build a royal tomb for himself despite his infatuation with immortality. Through the prodigious endeavours of more than 700,000 forced labourers, the mausoleum was completed 37 years later. To ensure utmost secrecy, all those who worked on the project were buried alive with the dead Emperor. Over the next 2,000 years, historians, tomb-raiders, and happy-go-lucky adventurers alike have been homing in on the royal treasure buried within.

However, no one has ever succeeded in locating the entrance to the mausoleum. Thus the bulk of the First Emperor's treasure, including the much-fabled elixir of youth, remains intact. The film gets into pace when intrepid archeologist Jack (Jackie Chan) and ambitious scientist William (Tony Leung Ka Fai) set out on an adventure. Their journey starts at Dasar, India, where they stumble upon an ancient sword from the Qin Dynasty and a magical gemstone that appears to be able to defy gravity. The booty not only leads them to the mythical mausoleum, but also connects Jack to his 'past life' in his dreams.

In his dreams, Jack is Meng Yi, a Qin General who falls for the First Emperor's beautiful consort Ok Soo (Kim Hee Seon). As Meng Yi commands his troops in an increasingly desperate war against rebels, he also has to battle his inner desires in choosing between eternal love and loyalty. Computer effects are heavily used such as in the innovative creation of an anti-gravitational Laboratory of William.

In the final part of the movie, there is the rather grand 'Palace in the Sky', based on historical text which said the Qin emperor had built such a place. With the help of computer modeling, artists used Qin dynasty architectural and design elements in creating the Palace in the Sky, giving it an ethereal and romantic setting for the climactic ending. But the largest set in The Myth is the one used for the General's final battle scene. It was a grand scale production, involving thousands of soldiers and horses from the Chinese military and cavalry posing as the mighty army of the Qin Dynasty.

The battle was shot at the Yellow River Forest of Rocks in faraway Jinsu Province and the Jinxi Plains of Beijing. The production was extensive. There were 300 crew members working on top of the thousands of extras in battle scenes. Many were injured on the set, including one where 22 people got hurt.

With elegant grace and power, The Myth envelops the audience in the magic of a timeless fable.

2nd ASEAN Schools netball Championship 2005 RESULTS

Finally, we have some to a closure of the exciting and memorable 2nd ASEAN Schools Netball Championship on 20th August. We were so close and we could have won this championship which we wanted badly.

There were a few turbulances before we finally arrived at our 12 players. These 12 lovely players have the right frame of mind and are committed and disciplined to deliver what we have set out to do - To bring honour to Singapore! The girls fought hard and displayed great fighting sprit. Now that i am left to reminisce all the games especially the FINALS.

I salute these 12 brave ladies!

1. Toh Wanling (Captain, GD best known for her ability to stay focused and rebounds)
2. Geraldine Tan (Gerry - Vice Captain, GK best known for her interceptions outside the goal circle - swoosh ...... ball in her hands already)

3. Yeo Pei Qin (our sharp and wants to be stronger shooter. Also voted for Most Fairplay Player)
4. Hong Wei Zhen (ever supporting GA - best known for her 'worm' shooting)
5. Debre Ang (voted for Most valuable mid-court player in 2nd ASEAN Schools Netball - C)
6. Rachel Tan (though small but very steady short bursts as WA)

8. Reena (GK who was on fire in the FINALs and gave Aruna (star shooter from Malaysia) a tight defence)

One last training session for the Under 18 girls this thursday before we depart for Johor Bahru this sat. 4 more days to go.

The organising committee in Malaysia is not disclosing anything so far. Need to really anticipate the unexpected and be mentally ready for the big game.

Dunno how many countries will be participating, no game schedule, format of play, when is the last day, how many players to a room, any shuttle bus to ferry us to the playing venue......the list goes on. We are having difficult planning for our return (are we coming back on 19 nite, 20 nite or 21 morning).

20th August (Sat) is YCKSS Opening - 40th Anniversary!

I was most fortunate to have attended loads of leadership camps, youth camps and courses, outdoor camps, netball camps and overseas trips and coaching. Most importantly, the great support i had from my teachers, coaches and instructors had allowed me to have a wide range of exposure. They were always there for me - till now.

Even though i do not see them so often, their teaching is what i treasured and remembered the most.

Have been feeling breathless ever since school reopens. That feeling has been dwelling for some time now (5 weeks to be precise). Did not manage to adjust that state of mind. Just feel like hidding or go for a retreat. Quite sick of what i do in school now...stagnant. Needed something enriching and meaningful. Not that teaching is not meaningful but haiz... enough of students, more students' nonsense (sometimes their attitude...sucks), more adults' nonsense, dunno what they want really, always blame the 'ground level' pple when things go wrong, never look at themselves first, never seek to understand us or try and build rapport with us...how to work like that... wondering why do we need to 'see their face' to do things... marking, more marking, setting tests/exams, paper work...going home late, very late again.

And of course no time to spend with the people i want to spend time with, meet new friends, learn new things or even want to help! I have neglected many people already...felt that i could have done more for them. BUT the PROB is i don't even have time for myself...i think i want to be selfish for once, i'm afraid.

I would have killed myself umpteen times...by now.

Meet an old friend - Mrs Lim (HSC)

Yesterday in town was kind of meant to meet old friends, colleagues and pupils. Went to watch The Island and met a few of current pupils in Lido. Thereafter went to Ngee Ann City, i would never imagine to meet this funky lady. She is Mrs Lim from Hai Sing Catholic, she was my NPCC officer and Buddhist studies teacher. We call her 'Buddha Lim'. A lady full of sense of humour and never fail to amaze us with all her up to date fashion. Yesterday she had these few streaks of hair dyed in red and gold colour. So coooooooool really! It was really good to see her again. She brightens my day that day!

75 standard push ups

Oh my god ! My shoulders and arms, or rather to be precise my pectorals are seriously aching, feeling sore now...guess what 75...75...75, let me emphasise again, 75! standard pushups today during netball training......really down on my luck today. We had a 'monkeys and ball' game similar to having defenders in the middle and attackers in a circle. In all 3 rounds, my group just failed our mission. I am feeling really TIRED now! Have not been doing upper body training for some time already. Perhaps it is time to work those muscles...here i go again. Must continue to SLIM down to 56kg...my ultimate aim, help me ya! Just lost 5kgs.....yippy!

Yeah i can finally enjoy my holiday! My level 2 coaching assessment (technical) has completed at 5.30pm. Has been feeling the stress for the pass two weeks. FINALLY its OVER! I PASSED! Yeah, celebration again! Our B girls took part in the Singapore Recreation Club Netball Carnival on 28th May and we came in 4th. Yi Yong was selected to play in the All-Star game, got free Adidas gear, well done girl! hmmm..that was the day i went for my diving trip, I am impressed with their performance! Especially the captain and vice-captain for taking charge! Splendid ladies - Yi Yong & Emmerline.

Diving Course

Just registered with my buddies for a Scuba diving course at Bigbubble ( near outram MRT, cantonment police station, along neil road, no 57, green door, website @ bigbubble.com[BBC] ).
Looking forward to starting the course. Theory on 16 & 19 May (BBC), in the pool (Outram Sec) on 17 & 18 May. Then from 27th to 29th May (Open water diving @ Tioman), how cool is that!
Will update my experience later in the blog.

Lets Play Netball Carnival 2005

Good news again! Our netball teams doing very well this year!

Our girls take part in the Let's Play Netball Carnival (Netball Singapore) on 19th March (Saturday) from 8.00am to 5.30pm.

Results in the Higher Division :
1st - River Valley High
2nd - Raffles Girls
3rd - Raffles Girls
4th - Yio Chu Kang Sec (check out next issue netball magazine)

We cleared first round qualifying for 2nd round playing SCGS (Won 7 - 0), Kent Ridge Sec (Won 7 - 1), Millennia Institute (Won 7 - 3), Raffles Girls (lost 4 -7), St Joseph's Convent (Won 5 - 1) and Frusty Fire (9 - 1).

In second round we played East Spring Sec and tie at 4 - 4. Went for sudden death, won 2 - 0! It was a very close fight! Our girls held our head high and played with gusto. Cleared East Spring Sec to qualify for top 4. My heart missed a beats in the game, really intensed!

Lost to River Valley High (3 - 10), thus could only content for 3rd or 4th position. Played Raffles and lost, settled in 4th position. Wonderful play by our girls.

1. Elizabeth Ng (Captain/GD, most valuable player(MVP)who made the most interceptions)
2. Li Pei Xian (V-Captain/GK, most outstanding game against East Spring with her interceptions of high ball, crucial contribution - turnover point)
3. Karen Chng (GS/GA, consistent shooter with good drives)
4. See Jia Jia (GA/GS, our last min converted shooter did a marvellous job in shooting, esp. long range)
5. Isis Sing (GS, our brave shooter)
6. Vivien Yuan (WA, very consistent feeder to the shooters, occasionally did a few wonderful feeds)
7. Zarina (C/WA, very hardworking midfielder who supports both the defenders and attackers, cannot do without her)
8. Lydia Lee (WD, occasionally surprises everyone with her interceptions)
9. Pei Hgor (WD, provided wonderful supports in the midfield)
10. Serene Ong (GK, Supports her team mates well)
11. Ying Wei (WA, contributed few good feeds to shooter)
12. Jas Ting (GS, hope she recovers well from her ankle injury)
13. Li Shi Ting (GS/ Scorer, did a fantastic job in recording every match's score.

I salute these players. I did know we can go so far! They played so hard and of course had to tolerate my scolding and yelling. Though i am still recovering from the numerous heart attacks from the carnival it is all worth it. I had a great time. All our efforts paid off in that whole day carnival ! Fantastic !

Well, paid for one service online which costs me US$29 using my credit card today. I am most apprehensive now... not sure if this money will be well spent and benefit my whole being. But mu curiosity got the better of me, got to see how accurate she(Sara Freder) is. Hmmm... is there any other hiding costs? I kept asking myself. I'll be freaked out if there is any.

In another two days, i should be able to get the results. Hmmm...is it gonna to enhance and change my whole life. I certainly hope so (for a much better tomorrow) !

Hmmm...great! Thanks to those Sec 203 & 4 girls, i had a wonderful soccer lesson with them today. They have been lovely! It's been a long time since i last enjoy such a good game. I had loads of fun playing with them. So much laughters, joy and cheekiness involved. Thanks for making my day! Three cheers to the grass! Hahaha...all over my face!

North Zone Netball Championship 2005 has finally come to a stop for our B girls...I thank the girls for training, playing hard and working intensely with me in this entire competition. What an achievement to just lose two out of the 9 games! We lost to two worthy opponents - Ang Mo Kio Sec and St Nicholas Girls. Though we lost and did not qualify for top 4 still our heads held high! Least we are in the top 6 in North Zone. We have earned respect and recognition that YCKSS netball is no longer just an ordinary netball team now. Everyone in the netball family has contributed tremendously to earning that respect be it you are playing in a competition or simply supporting the team. My biggest dream is to see YCKSS netballers representing Singapore in the near future.

I would like to thank the players as well as the officials and ardent supporters & fans of YCKSS netball.

Reunion Dinner

Dinner, not just any dinner, it has a special meaning today. Yummy my favourite home-made steamboat. It's great to eat with everyone in the family...surprise huh. Though we are one family we hardly have the time to really sit and eat together. Therefore, it has deep meaning for me. Of course, on top of the list is REUNION. It's great to see my sister, brother-in-law, two brothers, uncle, brother's girlfriend, parents and one addition to the family - my nephew sitting at the same table and having our very own home-cooked steamboat at home. Not that we have not sat together for the whole year but this dinner signals a new beginning, a new start for all of us,ties that bind - now closer. All of us are looking forward for a great year ahead.

May Joanne and Dennis successfully get a better job. May my dad has endless projects at hand - lol... more $$$. May Marcus has some savings. May Malcolm do well in his endeavour in Police Academy. May mum has an easier time with Glenn at home, gets ample rest and of course strike lottery...loll. May Glenn continue to grow well and learn more new things. May I be able to progress to a higher level in whatever i do...and ...not gonna write them all here...

Saturday's day out

Went to Meiling's farewell cum birthday chalet gathering...she is going to do her Master in Education @ Australia. Hmmm...what a way to get away stress from school, noise and pupils' and management's demands and neverending paperwork.

Will i ever do a Master in Education too? Pondering...
I have told myself that i will not study again...well well...wait till i am sick of school's work or when i have money or when i can no longer stand that someone in the school...maybe i will think of studying again. A way to rekindle the passion i have to learn more about education especially in PE modules...also to have a short vacation, to recharge my energy and passion in teaching.

Sometimes felt so stifled in school - especially have to work with people with high ego, hunger for power, eager to show off, don't know how to work as a team, no respect for own peers, someone who talks big...what a fart! So irritating and infuriating !
I have NO respect for such people cos they don't deserve it at all.

Right..so much so for my unhappiness in school. I want to think of happy thoughts. Yes, today i have had a great game of mahjong @ the Aloha Loyang garden terrace chalet. Wow, never had such big 'tai' before...K, what happened was this...I was losing...but at the last game...i already had two 'tai' and i had a mirror (bei ban) 'kang'!($$$) Two animals which 'ka'! (more $$$) and immediately i ended the game with 'zi mor' (even more $$$) ! So my friends all paid the maximum...hahahahah...what a way to end the game. In the end i won, recuperated all my losses! Never had such wonderful luck! Thank you my guardian angel ...muack, muack, muack ! See, least my mahjong ain't so bad (",) Had a great time!

Went to MPH last saturday and bought a few books which are really cheap. Found one book titled Move without THE ball by Stedman Graham. What attractive me was the front cover - as usual i am attracted by colourful things.

What does it takes to excel in sport?

He suggested the followings :
1. Know your TALENT
2. UNDERSTAND yourself and your role on the team
3. Form a VISION for yourself and set goals to make that vision happen
4. Work HARD AND INTENSELY in practice and and in training
5. Have a POSITIVE attitude.
6. COMMUNICATE and relate appropriate with coaches and teammates
7. Be CONFIDENT in your abilities
8. Be DURABLE and STRONG in overcoming setbacks
9 Be HUNGRY for growth and improvement
10 Be SMART

There are three mistales to avoid :
1. You overestimate your talent
2. You underestimate your talent
3. You don't know your strengths and weaknesses as an athlete

C girls first game

I can understand the fact that its the girls first game gave them the jitters... most players do not have enough competition experiences, let alone how to handle negative remarks given by external factors.
Must learn to deal with it

1) Ignore those remarks
2) Come back strongly, prove them wrong
3) Stay mentally strong and
lastly
4) give them a big SMILE, thank them for those ugly remarks......cool

Remember what you have learnt in Sports Camp - lol (",) i can still remember those funny scenes, do you?

Great last quarter played, more control and composure. Way to go! FOCUS is the key word - tougher state of mind

I did not realise that the Tsunami Disaster is so terribly serious till i saw the news. I was horrified and disturbed by what i saw. In fact, i was a little shaken and the whole morning i was feeling down. I knew i had to do something. Had no mood to train the girls in the morning, mind was distracted, simply can't even focused on what i do. Thank goodness for the rain, i managed to recompose myself and regain my concentration.

Gave the girls the personal feedback which i have always wanted to do. Felt better that i FINALLY did it. I must do this often, i must. I have already prepared two teams - one for sch tournament and the other for Daisy Tan Carnival, still i am not comfortable with the choice of players i have decided. Hope some players can wait for their turn to represent school...as i feel that they are not ready yet. It will not be fair to register them for a tournament which they have not been training for it.

I still have not announced my 12 players for the school tournament as ...i am still waiting for one player...no matter what condition she's in, she will always be one of my key players in the team. I do hope she can play in this year's tournament as it is going to be her final year of study in the school. I treasure every single one of them. Sometimes, it pains me when they are not part of it...it just does not seem complete. Well, do not fear or get unduly worried, be strong and be brave, i will be waiting for you. You will be fine (",) The netball family is with you. Your health comes first.

Netball Farewell Camp @ Biggin Hills Changi Aloha

Haiz...another year of saying good byes to the graduating netball darlings. Every farewell is so different and the feelings i have is ever so contradicting...mixed feelings I am both happy and doleful. Happy that they have grown up and become so special and sensible, doleful...(sob sob...) that they are leaving the netball family. The ties we shared are so closely knitted that every single moment we had been through is still so precious, dear and clear to me. Suddenly, i felt soppy...its me, I can't help it! Am all so overwhelmed with emotions, welled up with loads of tears, memories flashed pass, gratifications from the farewell...am i the only one?
How can i not love farewell...does it not bring us to a closer proximity.

[sitting at a corner or paying attention to the conversations of dialogues, observing quietly] It was really comforting to see the younger ones preparing their performance items so seriously, helping one another, reminding one another, encouraging one another, how can i not be thankful to them for treating this event with respect, importance & appreciation.

How can i not see the effort put in by everyone...from preparing wonderful gifts and items to singing to dancing to making speeches to sobbing with speeches to taking pictures to listening attentively to doing the MC to setting the stage to cooking food and many many more (",) Every fragment of the programme i noted. How can i inevitably missed all these...it will be such a disservice to all. Well done to everyone who made their presence felt, for contributing to an amazing, fruitful and meaningful nite spent! Where else would i want to be?

What can i say? My three lovelies are leaving the netball family, my eyes were soft with sorrow. But then again, was this the way to say goodbyes? Goodbyes do not mean we don't see each other again..."Don't be dismayed at good-byes. A farewell is necessary before we can meet again. And meeting again after a moment or lifetime is certain for those who still remain friends and remember each other." I reminded myself gently. We never did say goodbyes, do we? We will never be strangers, never!

I seemed to be at a lost of words when it was my turn to step to the front. Could sense all eyes were on me and as if everyone was waiting patiently for a semtimental 'song' - speech to feel moved. I was amazed by how i managed to finish my speech, t thought i would be stuck for words. What can i say?

I most devoutly wish that both of your future will be as bright as the stars, stars be your guide - no fear dears, just chin up and move on. We'll always welcome you back and also to all of the ex-netballers of YCKSS with both arms and smiles, anytime, i promise! Remember you are not alone (",) Let's walk side by side. Who else do i want to walk with but you...

I love all of you - netball family! Thank you for being there for me! Thank you for making me a better person too!

Netball Bonding Camp

I must admit i was dead-beat after the 2 camps. I must be crazy to have netball bonding camp after Sphere camp. But i thought it was less hazzling if the bonding camp was combined with sphere camp. I really wanted to interact with the girls' parents. Getting them to offer us especially to the girls their wonderful support is great. We had lined up a few challenges for them and it was amazing to see the enthusiasm the parents displayed. Great sportsmanship, great laughters, great bonding, great shooting and great sharing of good makan places...lol ! I must say it was a great success and we will have it again next year. The girls were sensible, responsible and they lived up to expectation in conducting the challenges' sessions. Rain did well in the MC job.

Sphere Sports Camp

The objective of the Sphere camp is to bond players for next year's tournaments and competitions. It was a wonderful and successful camp. Coaches, teachers and players come together to reinforce beliefs, support and goals, share visions and ideas and most importantly build wonderful relationships amongst us. That worked for me very well. I felt closer to my girls after the camp. I understand them better now and especially the capabilities on each individual. I enjoyed myself tremendously and playing games, sometimes silly and fun games with my girls has made me realised how important it is to keep the things we do simple. We get more out of it - more joy, more laughters(we laugh WITH one another), more smiles, more communications, more support, more belief in one another, more encouragement, more trust, more faith, more confidence, more affiliation, more care & concern and more love for each other.
The first day of the camp i felt it was a little too much for the girls to handle as we had two training sessions (one morning and one afternoon). I felt drained let alone the girls. Then again, this is a training camp for us. We need to prepare ourselves for the netball carnival on Saturday morning with AJC(guest team), Cedar Girls & Hai Sing Catholic High. Most importantly our focus on next year's competitions. All these are going to be serious & tough, bottomline is Are we ready? After the afternoon training, gave them a little time to relax and also a time for me to reflect on those training sessions. In the evening, we had a talk conducted by Mr Peter Khoo & Ms Grace on mental training. It had served its purpose. I particularly liked the videos used and games facilitated by the instructors. The ice hockey game was a classic of 'never say die' mentality, the perseverance displayed by the keeper made an impact to me. I wish all the girls have that mentality - keep going no matter what the circumstances will be. We control what we can do and not what we cannot do.
The second day's training i decided to give the girls more room to focus on what they do, so i kept it simple. After lunch we went to the pool for a light aqua training and also to unwind ourselves. It was a great break from the netball court for me. A different setting to train - got the girls to do some cross training in water - running, stretching and swimming. I thought it was a great idea, then some of them got cramps...lol i did not anticipate that. It was good to see the girls worked hard. After an hour's workout in the water, they were given time to unwind on their own. We played 'murderer' in water - great fun! I like it!
Sat morning was a hectic day for me, thank goodness, i had the sports leaders to help and the girls were cooperative. we had a good time and i am sure the girls had a good exposure playing with the teams. Overall, we did well and i am happy with some of the spirit and movements the girls displayed. There were still room for improvememts and i am still finding the right combination for next year. My only wish - that each player be consistent in their performance in each game. Treat each game as if it's an important last game - give their best!

Both B & C girls got second and our dear rebecca got the MVP award. She got the most votes from the coaches and teachers. We are so proud of her and it does give recognition to her valuable contribution. Keep it up dear!

What a Relief?

After afternoon's paper, rushed to return papers at the exam centre. Thank to my dar, manage to get home by 5pm to get ready for the Graduation nite. The whole day is a mad rush for me...really terrible. Hmmm...many thoughts just flashed through my mind when i took a closer look at the people at the Graduation Nite, especially those who were graduating. It was just comforting to see that most of them have grown to be more sensible and mature while others are still in their child-like state. Though i did not follow up with the pupils, the 421 pupils are the ones i really miss. Taught them for 2 years in their lower sec years. It is just heartwarming to see that they have changed for the better and have grown so much. Reality has hit some when their eyes were welled up with tears after the dinner...i can understand the sense of disorientation and helplessness they are going to face when they move on to the next stage of their life - more decisions to make on their own, moving out of their comfort zone, taking up more responsibilities on their own & facing with more challenges and uncertainties, the list goes on. Everyone has to travel through life phases/journeys. It is the kind of mentally and attitude that we need to gear ourselves up to face the reality out there. There will hardly be any one to constantly remind them what to do and what not to do...another chance/s will not be given so easily...little room for mistakes. The society is not as forgiving as compared to schools.Do U fear of the future. Well, well...there's always learning things through the hard way. Struggling for survival? Perhaps... But one thing for sure, there is always a pair of welcoming arms for them to turn to in school when they are faced with adversity. Emotions almost got the better of me when some teared...hugs...i melted...many wonderful memories came back. Mmmmmmmm...(sob sob) melts...I am gonna miss some of them terribly...

Hmm...just stressed...stressed...stressed...tired...tired...thinking of what's ahead...headache...camps, chalet, sec 1 orientation...should be quite fun. But at the moment...can't really feel the fun elements...(or am i getting old) What is feeling? [pondering...] sometimes i can feel the exhilaration about something but at times...feeling so numb...k but least still can feel numbness...lol (ku ku de xiao). Sometimes, really hope things can take care of themselves...how nice? Well...praying for good times ahead.

Hmm...everyday exam day I will need to repeat the same routine, collect exam question papers ---> check hall in exam proper condition ---> call late comez ---> worried fdor them ---> take care of special cases ---> bring cushion ---> put up & take down seating plans ---> fasten all the scripts ---> lock them in a safe place ---> prepare for afternoon papers ---> check hall again ---> prepare attendance lists ---> return all answer scripts to exam centre...haiz...every exam day is so routine & monotonous...do get stressed up...its the little things that are hassling me ("_) The most satisfying thing i had done would probably be to get the teachers to write something heartwarming for the O level exam sitting students. Wonder if that helps to boost their morale up, or sparks some confidence, or keep them going with all the sayings and encouragement and support and love. Whatever it is, lets finish this route to O level exam 2004 side by side. ALL THE BEST!

The world is really incredible. It is enormous and almost impossible to finish visiting every corner in this lifetime. But i just got to know that one of my seniors in Hai Sing Girls' High (graduated in 1988) is teaching in the same school as i am. Really amazing! Hei hei, does it surprise you that i am still keeping my secondary school magazines (from 1988 to 1991). Flipping through these magazines does bring back fond memories. Awesome! Also got to know that she was also in NPCC. We have almost the same initials (HSH - heng siew hoon (my name) & h___ s___ h__ (her name), and sch name - hai sing high, what a coincidence, all HSH!)...can you guess who this lovely is? She is two years senior than me when i was in sec 2. What a small world this is! I can't help but to believe that no matter how enormous the world is, we will bump into someone we know or will know later. I still remember that when i was studying in UK, one of my best friends was also studying in London. Interestingly, we did not plan to meet at all on that day. During one of the trips organized by Singsoc(singapore society, UK)to London, i had a feeling that i will meet this friend whom we all called Garfield that day. Just as i was roaming down the streets of London, was rounding a bend. There we were, we bumped into each other, shouted at the top of our voices, hugged each other for i think for a solid 10 mins. Amazing feeling! How do you explain the feeling i had (to foresee that we will meet)? Some psyche am i huh.

Talk about being a psyche, I don't think anyone believe this. The most spooky thing was when i was showering at home a few years back. Just as i closed my eyes to lather my hair with shampoo, strangely... a voice in my head told me that my best friend's dad had just passed away. I felt a sense of uneasiness. A few hours later, my friend called to say that her father had passed away. I can't explain this till now... and i never mentioned this to my friends esp my best friend. I guess probably it was my guardian angel who forewarned me so that i could be there to comfort my best friend.

The world is always full of surprises and/or unbelievable things around us...sometimes unexplanable.

Hmmmm, another fruitful year with the National Under 17 squad. Had a gathering with the potentials yesterday to round up this year's exciting events. I survived again while trying to juggle with work in school and commitment with the team. Must say a big thank you to Alice(awesome head coach) for her understanding, trust and faith and Rongzhen(fantastic manager) for her outstanding commitment in taking care of both the officials and players! Just recalling where i have been with these three years of commitment with Singapore Combined Schools and Netball Singapore...wow, first year(2002) to Malaysia, second year to Thailand and this year to New Zealand. To me, this year i am really blessed. I have gained so much experience from the two head coaches (Tony & Alice) (",) I even have the privilege to meet and learn from world class coach from Australia, Jill Macintosh. Hmmm...what two long and tedious weekends! Have been out from 540am to 8pm for almost two days in a tense and heart pounding place. Body and soul felt battered and drained. Simply had no energy left to do anything. Felt sleepy the whole time in school...eyes twitching and head throbbing like crazy...help!!! Feeling suffocated and souless...I NEED REST! Work is gonna kill me softly and surely...Where is my rest? Mmmmmmmmm...there was one good thing, he was there to help me pull through the weekends. Weeeeeee! Both the c and b girls participated in the PESS carnival. Did not expect them to go this far. We were top 8 out of 48 teams. Unfortunately, c girls met MGS and b girls met RGS. But it was a great exposure for the girls and i am really glad that they have become more mature in their play. Yiyong did a good job in leading the B girls, getting them to set objectives/goals to achieve in almost every game. Glad she is able to command respect from the girls. That helped to ease my 'stress' a little...why stress? well, sometimes i needed the time to reflect and be alone to think. Well done yiyong and her wonderful team! (",) Hope they can continue to mature in their play and develop the ummph! Rebecca also did very well in keeping her team together with her determination and focus. Glad that Huey Miin was back to strengthen the team. We needed her and she has made the right decision to come back to us. She is really talented and full of drive. Welcome back gal! The c girls are happy and they are geared up to know her better. The c girls are full of potentials. Keep going! I am proud of all of you babes! Let's work hard for next year's north zone's competition - persevere till the end! No PaIn No gAiN! Yeah!
